WONDERS OF EGYPT

Although there are many exceptional ancient monuments in Egypt, the Great Pyramid is probably the best known and most associated with ancient Egypt.  Built by the 4th Dynasty Pharaoh, Khufu (also known by the Greek name Cheops), it is the first of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and the only one to survive.  An engineering feat of immense proportions, the Great Pyramid of Cheops stood for more than 4000 years as the tallest building in the world.  It stands approximately 146 metres high and covers 13 acres of land.

South of the pyramids at Giza, sits an enormous creature with the head of a human and the body of a lion.  The Great Sphinx is a national symbol of Egypt and has inspired a wealth of speculation.  The Sphinx faces the sunrise, and the lion was likely a solar symbol in ancient culture.  The human head (thought to represent the pharaoh) on the lion’s body symbolized power and might, controlled by the intelligence of the pharaoh.  With a body 72 metres in length and a face four metres wide, the Great Sphinx is believed to be the most immense stone sculpture ever made by humankind.

Our encounters with the wonders of Egypt will take us to the famous pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx, as well as a cruise on the Nile River.
