DAY 06 LAKE NAKURU – SAMBURU NATIONAL RESERVE
Samburu is one of the world’s truly great wilderness areas. Lying 325 kilometres north of Nairobi in the hot and arid fringes of Kenya’s northern region, the reserve harbours a number of wildlife species rarely found elsewhere in any numbers: Grevy’s zebra, the reticulated giraffe, the Beisa oryx and the long-necked gerenuk, a graceful antelope which spends much of its time in a bi-pedal stance seeking sustenance among the withered scrub. The harsh terrain of Samburu is relieved by the wide Ewaso Ngiro River, which attracts elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras and leopards from the surrounding plains with water, trees and shade.

The reserve lies within the territory of the Samburu people, who are semi-nomadic pastoralists closely related to the Maasai.

Over the next few days, you will explore this dramatic wilderness from a variety of fascinating perspectives: early morning game drives, walking safaris with skilled Samburu guides, leisurely camel rides and raft trips when the river is high. Enjoy the end of the day with a festive sundowner event with local traditional dances.

DAY 09-10 MAASAI MARA
Spend two days in Maasai Mara taking exhilarating game drives in the Mara triangle. Maasai Mara is the quintessential African landscape, offering breathtaking views and an extraordinary density of wildlife. The reserve, gazetted in 1961, consists of 320 square kilometers of open plains, woodlands and riverine forest, abounding with zebra, giraffe, gazelle, topi, birdlife, elephant, buffalo and the big cats. The Mara and Talek rivers are teeming with hippos and crocodiles. Maasai Mara is the natural extension of the Serengeti plains in Tanzania, and each year the two parks host the world’s greatest natural spectacle as more than one million wildebeests migrate with the rains. At the Mara River they mass together before plunging forward through the waters, fighting against swift currents and waiting crocodiles.

The herbivores are followed by the predators, including lions, cheetahs and leopards, as well as hyenas and jackals, all of which are commonly sighted in the Mara.

In addition to game drives, you will take a breathtaking hot air balloon safari at sunrise to soar low over herds of buffalo or follow the hyenas on their morning hunt. Upon landing, a champagne breakfast will be waiting for you.
